Project Overview

Clarence City Council is conducting a floodplain study on Richmond and its surrounds. Council is calling on residents impacted by large flooding events along the Coal River to share their photographs or memories of the flooding.

Historic records indicate that the Coal River experienced large flood events in 1993, 1996, 2009 and 2011. These floods are of particular interest, however, council officers are also keen to hear any experience with flooding in the catchment.

Photos and stories of flooding will be used by the consultants to help ensure that flood modelling is consistent with the real-life experience of flooding through the township.

Background

Clarence City Council has engaged a specialist consulting company to update the Richmond Floodplain Study, previously undertaken in 1995. The aim of this works is to help council better manage flood risk along the river, particularly through the township of Richmond. Outputs from this study will also assist the Department of State Growth with the management and conservation of the Richmond Bridge.
